A removable service layer
A separate layer can receive routine contact before the finished mattress or pillow does. Whether it can be laundered—and how often—depends on the released care label and construction.
Product systems / Practical guide
The defensible reason is practical: introduce a removable, separately serviceable layer with a defined coverage and care role. The format may also add light cushioning or absorbency, but it does not by itself promise better sleep, health protection, cooling, pest control, or any named performance.
Maintenance value is not a sleep or health outcome.A removable layer can change how an item is covered and serviced. Any claim about sleep quality, allergy, temperature, pests, hygiene, or product longevity needs its own defined evidence and lawful wording.

The construction and care instructions decide whether a particular product can deliver any of these roles in practice.
A separate layer can receive routine contact before the finished mattress or pillow does. Whether it can be laundered—and how often—depends on the released care label and construction.
Top-only, fitted, five-sided, and six-sided formats expose different surfaces and failure paths. The useful value is the coverage actually specified, not the word “protector.”
A removable layer can be inspected, serviced, or replaced separately from the underlying sleep product. That is a maintenance option, not a promise about mattress life.
A protection-first mattress pad may add a thin fill, quilted structure, absorbency, or surface softness. It should not be confused with a comfort-led topper.
Choose by the problem
These category roles describe a design choice. They do not state that every researched construction is supplied by ProtectMySleep.
| Format | Useful when | Practical value | Not automatic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mattress protector | The brief calls for a low-profile, removable layer over the mattress, with top-only, fitted, or another precisely stated coverage. | Separates a routine-use surface from the finished mattress while adding little intended bulk. | Waterproofness, water resistance, wash durability, quietness, breathability, cooling, or side-barrier coverage. |
| Mattress pad | Protection is primary, but a thin cushion, quilted construction, absorbent layer, or modest surface-softness change is also wanted. | Combines a removable service layer with light, construction-dependent cushioning or absorbency. | Topper-level comfort change, liquid containment, a universal care profile, or regulatory classification based only on the product name. |
| Mattress encasement | The brief requires all six mattress surfaces to be enclosed and a closure-led system can be installed and serviced. | Extends physical coverage to the underside and makes seams, zipper, terminal, fit, and installation part of one defined system. | Bed-bug, allergen, liquid, or medical performance. Those require challenge-specific, complete-product evidence and claim review. |
| Pillow protector | A removable layer is wanted around a finished pillow beneath the pillowcase, with a named zipper, flap, envelope, or other closure. | Creates a separately serviceable layer around a pillow without redefining the pillowcase. | A sealed enclosure, waterproofness, allergen control, cooling, or a health outcome. |

CPSC describes a mattress pad as a thin, flat mat or cushion, and/or ticking filled with resilient material, for use on top of a mattress, and states that mattress pads are subject to 16 CFR Part 1632. The actual article still controls the review.
Read the CPSC guidanceA construction description is not evidence that a product prevents, treats, or relieves an allergy, condition, or other health concern. Express and implied health-related claims need evidence appropriate to the exact wording and product.
